FLEMISH BRABANT SENDS OUT THE HERFSTS TO CHENGDU INTERNATIONAL YOUTH MUSIC FESTIVAL
East meets West
The Chengdu International Youth Music Festival and its many activities take place from July 25th to 29th in Chengdu, People’s Republic Chengdu. The festival is organized for youngsters from various sister cities and regions of Chengdu. Through the universal language of music and dance, the Chinese government aims to bring together diverse cultures in a non-competitive setting. The result is a joyful gathering of Eastern and Western cultures.
Flemish Brabant and Belgium will be represented by The Herfsts, a young music band from Leuven, the oldest university town of the Low Countries with peculiar Oxfordian airs. Participation came in effect thanks to a strategic partnership between the provincial government of Flemish Brabant and the metropolitan city of Chengdu.
About The Herfsts
The Herfsts is a collective of seven energetic youngsters with a dream: playing music they love and incorporating tunes they couldn’t find in local record shops. The result is a vibrant blend of indie-powerpop with a mighty hint of enthousiasm. It even got them in the higher rankings of renowned Belgian rock competitions and festivals such as Humo’s Rock Rally, Marktrock Leuven and the bi-annual Rockvonk. By performing in Chengdu, the Herfsts get a well-deserved opportunity to demonstrate and elevate their musical talent onto a global level.
Stimulating creativity
The path of internationalisation has become instrumental to many of Belgium’s music bands. Success and international gigs often go hand in hand, because i.a.
– other cultures force artists to think outside their comfortzone
– experiences abroad stimulate creativity and flexibility. You play with the best and most inspirational.
– artists who go global expand their musical and business networks, resulting in more gigs and a diverse, broad fanbase
Our Belgian artists are also ambassadors of Belgian creativity. Flemish Brabant in particular is renowned for its innovative and cosmopolitan spirit, mainly attributed to its many start-ups, spin-offs, airport, proximity of EU capital Brussels and some of the world’s best known music festivals. Through musical public diplomacy Flemish Brabant spreads out its image well into the farthest reaches of the world.
The Herfsts will join an already impressive list of musical globetrotters originating from Flemish Brabant. Milow is a DIY-musician creating a buzz in Hollywood, Selah Sue tours the USA with lofty accolades from Prince, our British neighbours accross the Channel have discovered Float Fall, Black Box Revelation performed live on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman and last but not least, Isbells paved the way in China.
It is also the second time that the Province of Flemish Brabant sends its musical offspring to China. Last year, Frascati Symphonic -an educational project for classical musicians- took part in the Chengdu International Youth Music Festival and was well received by the Chinese public. Last Christmas season they returned to China and toured 12 cities, sold out venues included.
Next to this blog, the adventures of The Herfsts will be recorded in a road trip documentary by Philip James McGoldrick, a young and rising star in the artistic short movie scene.
